Because herbs are such versatile plants, arriving at a firm definition can be tricky. When is a plant a herb? Herbs-Spices
follows the general guide below to differentiate between Herbs.
Although we try to cover every aspect of both herbs and spices we do
primarily focus on there culinary attributes. Cooks: herbs are plants that are used to add flavours, contrast, and/or dynamics to foods. Typically, herbs are the stems, leaves, and flowers of a plant, while spices are derived from seeds, bark, or root.
Botanists:
often use the word “herb” to describe plants without woody stems that
grow through spring, summer, and autumn, and then die back to the
ground in winter. By this definition, petunias and pansies are herbs,
as are crabgrass and lettuce. Herbalists: or herbal healers, numerous everyday foods such as pineapple, mushrooms, and cooked greens fall into the category of herbs. Along with plants that are widely recognized for their medicinal properties such as Aloe and Feverfew.
Massage therapists: herbs are plants valued primarily for their aromas, especially when their relaxing, stimulating, or soothing effects are combined with skilled human touch. Tree barks and oils make way into this definition of herbs, as do fragrances derived from fruits. |
